A Patch of Yellow on a Slow Morning

A Patch of Yellow on a Slow Morning

I wasn't really looking for anything when I found these cosmos. It was one of those slow mornings in the hills where the mist hadn't quite lifted yet, and everything felt soft and unfinished. I'd been walking for an hour, mostly just listening to my own footsteps and the occasional bird somewhere in the trees.

Then this small patch of yellow caught my eye at the edge of the trail, just sitting there in the half-light like it had been waiting for someone to notice. I crouched down and stayed there for a while. The wind kept moving the petals, back and forth, never quite still. I tried a few times, waited, tried again. There's something about photographing flowers that teaches you patience in a different way than chasing animals does — they don't run, but they don't pose either. You just have to be there when the light and the wind decide to agree with each other.

Eventually the sun came through a little stronger, and for maybe ten seconds everything lined up. That was enough. I stood up, brushed the dirt off my knees, and kept walking. Sometimes the smallest things on a trail stay with you longer than the big ones.
