The Gull and the Quiet Lake

The Gull and the Quiet Lake

The morning was cold and still. I had been waiting by the lake for hours, hoping for something—I wasn't sure what.

The water was glass, and Mount Fuji sat in the distance like a silent guardian. Then this gull landed on the post, not ten meters away. It didn't look at me.

It just sat there, fluffing its feathers, watching the water like it had nowhere else to be. There was no wind, just the soft ripple of the lake and the occasional cry of another bird far off. I remember thinking how strange it was that such a common bird could hold so much presence. It wasn't posing or showing off. It was simply existing, and for a moment, that felt like enough. I've come to learn that wildlife photography isn't always about the rare or the grand. Sometimes it's about the gull on a post, in the quiet shadow of Fuji, teaching you to be still.
